CLEVELAND, Ohio – Authorities say a street gang called the Car Creepers terrorized residents in a crime wave that saw members commit seven burglaries, steal 33 cars and victimize 83 people in cities across Northeast Ohio.
Cuyahoga County prosecutors said Tuesday that a grand jury indicted eight members of the gang on 224 charges, including racketeering, aggravated murder, aggravated theft and aggravated robbery. “The individuals indicted today have wreaked havoc and inflicted violence across Northeast Ohio,” said Prosecutor Michael C. O’Malley. “Crime does not stop at any one border.”
In a statement, O’Malley’s office said that from April 1, 2022, to July 25, 2023, eight members of the gang drove to different cities late at night and searched for cars and trucks that had been left unlocked. The members would steal them and grab any credit cards inside the vehicles, the statement said.
But the gang’s members went beyond stealing cars. They often fired shots at people and vehicles, according to the charges.
For instance, four of the members drove a stolen vehicle near Warrensville Center and Mayfield roads in South Euclid on March 8. From a window, they fired several shots at a 16-year-old girl and her 1-year-old daughter, striking the victims’ car.
Three months later, one of the members, Jordan Hicks, drove to a home on Dresden Road in Cleveland Heights. He left the vehicle and fired several shots into the house, prosecutors said. He then fled.
On July 2, Hicks and two others shot at three teenagers near St. Clair and Holmes avenues in Cleveland. One victim, 17, was killed, while two others were taken to a nearby hospital for injuries.
The grand jury indicted the three members on charges of aggravated murder with a “drive-by” specification that would add five years to their sentences if they are convicted.
Six days later, two members, TyJier Riley and Dadren Carter, drove a stolen vehicle to a residence near Tunbridge Lane and Deptford Drive in Beachwood. Riley and Carter exited the vehicle and approached two people, ages 42 and 48, as they were exiting their vehicle, according to prosecutors. Riley and Carter held the victims at gunpoint and stole their vehicle.
Attorneys for Hicks and Riley could not be reached. An attorney for Carter is not listed in court documents.
